Hunt Unit 5A offers a variety of habitats. Its southern region lies in the heart of Arizona’s famed Mogollon Rim brining explorers some of the most scenic breathtaking views surrounded by ponderosa timbered mountains and numerous canyons; in the higher elevations spruce, fir and aspen. 5A also contains the rim’s highest peak, Baker’s Butte at an elevation of 8077 feet with a look-out tower with spectacular hundred mile views. Its central region meanders through the cedar juniper belt eventually arriving at its lower elevations of the high grasslands in the northern part of the boundary.
Hunt Unit 5A offers trophy big game hunting for elk, mule deer, antelope, black bear, mountain lion and turkey. Great opportunities for small game such as bobcat, coyote, fox, cottontail rabbit, squirrel and more are also awarded in this unit.
Additionally, because of the numerous lakes, water tanks, rivers and streams, it provides excellent waterfowl and fishing potential. Waterfowl species include Canadian geese, mallards, mergansers, blue winged teal, northern pintail, and more.
Gamefish species in the high elevations lakes and streams include Rainbow and Brown Trout. The two most popular lakes are Blue Ridge Reservoir and Knoll Lake that provide camping, boating, hiking, and fishing for trophy-sized trout.
